Relationships Are Hard to Quantify but Easy to Observe

Some of the most important aspects of our relationships are the hardest to measure.
We easily notice when our partner looks lovingly into our eyes, when conversations flow effortlessly, or when we simply feel energized and joyful in each other's presence.
These moments speak loudly, yet resist being neatly quantified or tracked on a spreadsheet.
Similarly, when distrust creeps in, or when there’s tension in the space between us, we feel it immediately. It’s unmistakable and impossible to ignore, yet challenging to pin down precisely or address using a straightforward metric.
Quantify everything
In our data-driven culture, we often want to quantify everything—steps taken, calories consumed, dollars earned. But relationships are different. They thrive on subtle qualities like trust, warmth, understanding, and connection, none of which lend themselves easily to measurement.
One client I coached was trying to wrap his head around whether he and his wife were "making progress" toward repairing their marriage. We explored tangible signs, like having fewer arguments, and intangible signs, like moments of genuine laughter or feeling more relaxed together. Recognizing both provided clarity and reassurance that progress was indeed happening. And he was relieved to notice he did not need “hard proof” to know that his wife’s mood towards him had changed – it was easy to feel, observe.
On the professional front, a team lead I coached wanted to feel more confident in interactions with her managers and team members. It was hard to quantify the impact when she chose not to speak up with a better solution during meetings. Yet it was easy to observe her frustration afterwards as she berated herself for staying quiet. Addressing this intangible, yet clearly felt, experience helped her take actionable steps toward building confidence and speaking up more consistently.
Instead of trying to quantify these experiences, we sometimes do better by honoring and acknowledging their significance. That is, when you "feel something" good with your partner, call it out. Appreciate him or her for it.
Recognizing these hard-to-quantify indicators of relationship health helps us nurture the intangible yet essential elements that make our partnerships deeply fulfilling.
Here are a few practical steps you can experiment with:
Journal brief reflections: Each day, jot down moments when you felt connected or disconnected. Notice patterns over time.
Share observations: Regularly share your positive and challenging "intangible" observations with your partner or colleagues. Simply acknowledging them can deepen understanding.
Seek feedback: Periodically ask trusted people in your life what intangible qualities they notice in your interactions. Their insights can offer new perspectives.
This month, I invite you to pay special attention to those "easy to observe, hard to measure" moments. Celebrate them, talk about them, and let them guide you toward creating more warmth, trust, and connection in your relationships.
